On Saturday, it was reported that as many as 30 children lost their lives due to encephalitis in a span of 48 hours at the hospital.

Sharply reacting to death of 30 children in a hospital in Uttar Pradesh due lack of oxygen, Nobel Laureate Kailash Satyarthi said that it is not a tragedy, but a massacre. On Thursday morning, employees who handle the storage plant at the hospital from where oxygen is piped wrote to the Chief Medical Officer informing him that the stock of liquid oxygen was limited and would last only till that evening. Reason behind most of the death cases was due to Japanese Encephalitis (JE) and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES).

CM also presented the figure of deaths of children in the last 5 days. The principal had later resigned taking "moral responsibility" for the death of the children admitted in the hospital's paediatric ward.

The office of Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Twitter that Modi was "monitoring the situation in Gorakhpur" and was in touch with state authorities.

Branding the Gorakhpur hospital tragedy as an "unforgivable act", Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Sunday accused the Uttar Pradesh government of sheer negligence, demanding a strict action against the accused.

The hospital had defaulted on the payment for oxygen as a result of which the firm sending the cylinders had stopped supply.
