The Supreme Court on Monday stayed till Friday the Madras High Court order, staying Centre's lookout notice against Karti Chidambaram, son of former Finance Minister P Chidambaram, and others in an alleged corruption case filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

On August 10, Madras High Court had granted an interim stay on the lookout notice issued against Karti Chidambaram by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and CBI in the FEMA rules violation case. To this, "We are not on the issue whether he is guilty or not". Has he participated and cooperated in the investigation? "How will it be if people of this country do not respond to investigations against them?" We are on a very small issue. The court has directed him to appear before the CBI and has forbidden him from travelling overseas.

Karti had said he was scheduled to visit the United Kingdom from August 16 for two weeks and that if the LOC was not recalled, his travel plans would be jeopardised. There is nothing on anticipatory bail and only you have sought quashing of the FIR.

The Supreme Court said it will hear the matter today itself.

Steinmetz held in inquiry intomoney laundering

Before passing the order, the bench said that there was another option for Karti that he should pursue the petition for quashing the FIR and get a final order on it.

Mehta told the bench that the Madras High Court had no jurisdiction to entertain the matter.

The CBI accuses Karti of facilitating Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance given to media group INX Media Pvt Ltd for "kickbacks" when his father P Chidambaram was the finance minister.

The CBI had claimed that the FDI proposal of the media house, cleared by Chidambaram, was "fallacious".
