Man Who Burned Retina During 1962 Eclipse Warns Others of Viewing Dangers

It's being called the Great American Eclipse, and on August 21st millions of people across the country will witness the first total solar eclipse to cross North America in almost a century.

Lou Tomososki was a high school teen in 1962 when his science teacher told the class about a solar eclipse that was going to take place that afternoon, NBC affiliate KGW reported. He compared it to having your picture taken and seeing the flashbulb. And 55 years later, "Nothing has changed", he told TODAY. He closed his left eye and viewed it with his right eye for about 20 seconds. "You can burn out your camera in the cellphone just like your retina", he said.

A reason why he urges those planning to watch Monday's solar eclipse to be careful. "It's doesn't get any worse or better".

Syracuse basketball: Andrew White signs with Boston Celtics
I have always said I would be a Celtic for life, and now it is really coming true". The game is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.

"Millions of people out there are going to be looking out at it ..."

That's why Monday's solar eclipse is particularly risky, said Dr. Neil Bressler, head of the retina division at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore. As a result, patients with solar retinopathy may have blurry vision or a central blind point in their eyes, according to the AAO. When he said yes, the doctor joked that he got laser surgery on his eye even before it was developed, except it was done in the wrong spot, and that he did it for too long.

LSU Health New Orleans retina specialist Maria Reins says to look at the eclipse with your eyes, make sure you wear glasses that are IPSO 12312-2 certified because regular sunglasses arena'th enough.

It won't defend groups who come armed to protests
An ACLU spokeswoman confirmed the policy shift and said the concern over weapons was not something the group has had to contend with in the past.

"It'll cause loss of vision, it can cause blind spots in your vision, and it can cause your vision to be warped as well", he said.

"The main way of treating is prevention and trying to have people be educated in knowing you can develop permanent damage from this", says Dr. El-Sanhouri.

"I'm going to go out and enjoy it", he said.
