A statue of Robert E. Lee was vandalized at Duke University sometime in the night between Wednesday and Thursday.

As this process moves forward, I welcome your thoughts about how Duke can best address the troubling events of the past few months, learn from a careful and unvarnished understanding of our national and institutional history, and build a stronger, more inclusive future as a university community.

A fresh debate over Confederate symbols has roiled the U.S. since Saturday's violence during a protest by white supremacists in Charlottesville, Virginia, against the removal of a Lee statue in which one woman died.

Eureka Times-Standard: Humboldt County unemployment rate for July
This compares with an unadjusted unemployment rate of 5.4 percent for California and 4.6 percent for the nation in July. Farm industries added 1,800 jobs on a month-over basis, while nonfarm industries shed a net 4,900 jobs.

The city's four black city councilmen held a joint news conference Friday to say they supported removing the statues as a way to start healing the city's racist past. While Duke has long held the statues are symbolic and not meant to represent real people, the image of Lee is unmistakably that of the Confederacy's top general.

Duke University president Vincent Price said in a letter to the campus community that he consulted with faculty, staff, students and alumni before deciding to remove the statue.

The discovery came as US President Donald Trump stoked the controversy over the statues, echoing white nationalists by decrying the removal of what he said were "beautiful" monuments to the pro-slavery Confederacy. Officials discovered early Thursday that the statue's face had been gouged and scarred and that part of the nose is missing. That brought the number arrested in connection with Monday's toppling to eight.

Chhattisgarh: BJP leader arrested after cows die at government-aided shelter
The reasons are strikingly similar - improper facilities, lack of fodder, no hygiene, pneumonia caused by rains, etc. Villagers, however, alleged that the number of deaths would be 200 and majority have been buried near the shelter.

Other monuments around the state have been vandalized since the Charlottesville protest.

The incident happened sometime overnight, Duke University spokesman Keith Lawrence said, adding that the campus police are investigating.

The Lee statue had stood for about 85 years between two other historical figures of the American South, Thomas Jefferson and poet Sidney Lanier, along the main entryway to the neo-Gothic church at the centre of Duke's campus. "We haven't come as far as perhaps we thought we had come as a nation", Powery said.
