Three major charities cancel galas at Trump's Mar-a-Lago

The Cleveland Clinic has announced that the hospital's 2018 fundraiser gala will not take place at the Donald Trump-owned Mar-a-Lago resort in Palm Beach, Fla. In February, hundreds of doctors, nurses and medical students at the Clinic penned an open letter calling for the hospital to sever its ties with Trump, including its 2017 Mar-a-Lago event. "It has become increasingly clear that the challenge to those values is outweighing other business considerations", it said in a statement to the Palm Beach Post.

"The American Red Cross has decided we can not host our annual fundraising event at Mar-a-Lago, as it has increasingly become a source of controversy and pain for many of our volunteers, employees and supporters", the organization said in a statement.

The nonprofit said in a statement that it had planned to host its 2018 gala at Mar-a-Lago "based on a variety of factors, including costs and venue requirements".

10-year-old rape victim gives birth after being denied abortion
The 10-year-old originally became pregnant after being raped repeatedly by an uncle, who is now in jail and is awaiting trial. Seeking compensation for the child, Jaising said that she was only a 10-year-old and can not look after the child.

Spokeswoman Eileen Sheil had said last week that the event was not political and that donors and executives discussed it and agreed Mar-a-Lago met the organization's needs.

For Trump, the cancellations will mean a significant loss of income, unless the staff at Mar-a-Lago finds new customers who want to book a 20,000-square-foot ballroom embellished with 24-karat gold leafing, modeled, as Trump told Florida Design magazine, after Versailles.

On Thursday, CNNMoney reached out to all the organizations that have announced plans to hold events at Mar-a-Lago in the coming months. High-profile CEOs like JPMorgan Chase's Jamie Dimon have publicly slammed Trump's reaction to the violence that broke out at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, on Saturday.

"We allow for a cocktail hour - an hour and a half, really [during a silent auction fundraiser]", said Peter Brock, chairman for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, which has hosted a fundraiser at the Mar-a-Lago for eight years, according to The Post. The group, which raises money for an ambulance service in Israel, has been holding its annual gala at the resort since 2012.

Baker, head of the Palm Beach chamber, spoke vigorously against Mar-a-Lago on Thursday, saying that her directive to nearby charities was, "If you're looking at your mission statement, can you honestly say having an event at Mar-a-Lago, given all that has transpired, is the best stewardship of your efforts?"
