"These are times of emergency, when the strategic balance of the Korean Peninsula is entirely changing, and the expression "slightly supplement" reflects an understanding of the situation that is too lax", the newspaper said in an editorial Thursday.

But some experts do not agree that Pyongyang's acquisition of nuclear weapons is an unacceptable option.

Moon said he thinks Trump's belligerent words are meant to show a strong resolve for pressuring the North and don't necessarily display the willingness for military strikes.

Rejecting Japan's position that the comfort women issue was settled by the Korea-Japan normalization treaty in 1965, Moon said it was never addressed at the time.

These comments came following a flurry of threats by President Trump and other officials over the past week, which have fueled fear of a nuclear war with North Korea.

The drills, which began in the 1970s and involved 25,000 American and 50,000 South Korean soldiers a year ago, consist mainly of computer simulations aimed at honing joint-decision making and planning and improving command operations. While it is essential to adopt a firm stance on North Korea's rash behavior, that by itself is not enough.

Bruce Bennett, a defense analyst at RAND Corporation, noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping has held eight summit meetings with the South Korean president but none with the young North Korean leader, which he said "clearly suggests" that Xi "thinks Kim Jong Un is a lightweight and really not important". Beijing is reluctant to put so much pressure on the regime that it risks collapse, in part to avoid a scenario that could lead to a unified Korea and push USA troops right up to China's border. "Hopefully Trump will find another path. Things will become even more hard if Beijing and Washington are pitted against each other". "And the North won't be able to endure it", he said, "I want to warn the North that it must stop this unsafe brinkmanship".
