Referencing the recent solar eclipse, writer Beth McColl wrote: "In the run up to Notting Hill Carnival, the moon has appeared to make an aggressive move to "take over" the solar system".

When contacted for comment by IBTimes UK, the Met police responded saying: "Today's activity was targeting individuals where we had intelligence to suggest that they were planning to commit crime at the Notting Hill Carnival".

Comparisons were also made with policing of events attended by a majority of white people, such as Glastonbury, where random drug searches are carried out on a small number of revellers.

Earlier, the official Met Twitter account shared a picture of a cling-film wrapped bundle alongside the caption: 'In the run up to #NottingHillCarnival, officers have seized what is believed to be a kilo of uncut heroin in #Catford'.

Chief Superintendent Robyn Williams, the Met's spokesperson for Notting Hill Carnival, said: "We are committed to ensuring that Carnival remains a safe, vibrant and enjoyable event; troublemakers are not welcome".

The Met tweeted on Tuesday morning that the drugs had been seized as part of a pan-London crackdown on gang, knife and drug crime ahead of the carnival.

The BBC reports that since August 11, some 290 people have been arrested for various offenses and 190 knives and 18 firearms have been recovered.
