United States revises assessment on North Korean missile launches

North Korea launched several suspected ballistic missiles Saturday, according to South Korean media.

North Korea launched at least three missiles into the East Sea on Saturday morning, resuming its provocative acts after a monthlong hiatus despite Washington's diplomacy-first approach toward the belligerent regime.

It was later confirmed they had travelled 250 km, far enough to hit South Korea.

North Korea this week said the exercises were evidence that the United States planned to invade North Korea.

"So rather than a newly developed missile, it looks to be short range missiles they fired as part of their summer exercise and also in response to the Ulchi Freedom Guardian drill", he said.

Initially, Pacific Command announced the first and third missiles had failed to launch, but its assessment of the second missile blowing up "almost immediately" still appears to be accurate.

The latest launch comes during an annual joint military exercise between the United States and South Korea that the North condemns as an invasion rehearsal.

The missiles were launched from Kittaeryong, in North Korea's eastern Kangwon province.

The request came following an August 19 meeting held by US and Japanese defense ministers, during which officials pledged greater defense cooperation between the two nations, and "unwavering USA commitment to extended deterrence" in the face of Pyongyang's growing brinkmanship.

While the USA and South Korea have proceeded with the military exercise despite North Korea's warning, not that the superpower US could call it off as it would be seen as a defeat, there's something about the drill that raises eyebrows. The country celebrates another military anniversary on Monday and its founding day on September 6, and Japan, the USA and South Korea are keeping close watch for any provocations on these dates.
