More than 6,000 workers from across the country remain on-site today working to complete the nation's first new nuclear units in three decades years.

The new units are expected to boost Georgia Power rates to retail customers by as much as 10.3 percent. "I believe it is clearly uneconomic, and it is the (state utility regulator's) responsibility to require the least-cost option". A decision is expected by February.

Georgia Power and the Vogtle project's other co-owners had been forced to reassess the project following the bankruptcy in March of Westinghouse.

Georgia Power highlighted in a statement Vogtle's promise to provide clean, stable power for up to 80 years. Based on new assessments, the total estimated capital cost forecast for the total project is approximately US$19bn.

Five of the ten refineries that had been shut down on the Texas Gulf Coast were restarting on Friday, reported S&P Global Platts. Gas futures shot up more than 10% Thursday, the last day of trading for contracts that promised September delivery of gasoline.

In a victory for Cranberry-based Westinghouse, Georgia Power has recommended that the Georgia Public Service Commission support completion of the two Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear power plant units now under construction at Plant Vogtle in Waynesboro, Ga.

Both plants were designed and being constructed by Pittsburgh-based Westinghouse, a subsidiary of Toshiba Corp of Japan, and were touted as quicker to build and safer than prior plants.

Like units 1 and 2, which also had cost overruns, Bundros said he is confident the new units will ultimately prove to be a good deal for Dalton Utilities.

A month ago, SCANA and Santee Cooper chose to abandon the almost identical V.C. Summer project in SC because of rising costs of the $14 billion project, falling demand for electricity, construction delays and Westinghouse's bankruptcy.

Vogtle's owner's have refused to "throw in the towel" like a similar project in SC at the beginning of August.

The Vogtle project hinges on ailing Toshiba making good on its settlement, which will be paid in installments, and USA lawmakers extending production tax credits.

Georgia Power also says it has contracted with Bechtel to manage daily construction efforts.
