A multi-state outbreak of human Campylobacter infections that has sickened at least 39 has been linked to puppies sold through Petland, a national pet store chain.

"Despite where they are from, any puppies and pooches may convey Campylobacter germs", the CDC said in an announcement. Patients typically develop symptoms within two to five days of exposure and may suffer from diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.

Nearly every patient recovers within five days without treatment, though drinking extra fluids is recommended.

Of the persons affected by the illness, 12 are Petland employees, but 27 recently purchased a puppy from Petland, visited a Petland, or visited or live in a home with a puppy sold through Petland before illness began.
