NHC forecasts Hurricane Jose to go in a circle over the Atlantic

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says it's expected to weaken to a tropical depression by Tuesday afternoon.

"We have so much damage right now around the state". As Hurricane Irma approaches Florida, high winds, flooding, and storm surge have the potential to affect energy infrastructure such as power plants as well as power transmission and distribution lines. "It's frightful, what we saw".

US President Donald Trump called Hurricane Irma "some big monster" as it battered the Florida coast on Sunday (Sep 10), saying he wanted to go to the state very soon and praising emergency officials for their efforts to protect people.

"It's hard to really know what's going on deep down inside the bowels of a storm", he said, and whether that drop in pressure is causing the inner or outer winds of the storm to intensify. About 5,000 of the Keys' 30,000 permanent residents stayed to ride out the storm, Florida Keys spokesman Andy Newman said.

More than 1 million residents had already lost power by Sunday morning, and it could be days before officials can provide food and water to those struggling in the aftermath of the powerful storm.

Jose, a Category 4 storm, had been passing north of the outer Caribbean islands and is expected to move away Saturday night, the National Hurricane Center said.

The first was over the Florida Keys, and the second, over Marco Island, left the island without water and power, authorities said.

Gusts topping 90 miles per hour whipped Miami on Sunday, knocking out power to most of the city's residents.

Many streets were flooded in downtown Miami and other cities.

The Keys felt Irma's full fury when the storm blew ashore as a Category 4 hurricane Sunday morning with 130 miles per hour winds.

Naples was among the Florida cities pummeled by Hurricane Irma on September 10 - coincidentally the same day that Hurricane Donna devastated Naples 57 years ago, according to David Fralick, the city's communications manager.

Forecast models aren't sure what will happen to the system after Friday but Porter speculates that where Irma ends up could play a crucial role in Jose's path.

Fortunately for typically hurricane-prone North Carolina, Irma's track goes west of the state, so only a glancing blow is likely.

When people think about hurricanes, they tend to think more about the dangers related to powerful winds, and less about the dangers of rising, fast-moving waters.
