Slender Man case on trial; girl's mental state at issue

Jury selection began Monday in the trial of one of two United States teens accused of stabbing a friend to appease a fictitious internet character, in a case that sparked a TV documentary "Beware the Slender man".

Anissa Weier and Morgan Geyser were both 12 when they allegedly knifed Payton Leutner in a frenzied attack and left her for dead in woods to please the creepy figure.

Payton survived by crawling into the path of a passing cyclist who called for help. Weier and Geyser were arrested later that day and said they were walking to meet Slender Man in a northern Wisconsin forest.

They stabbed her 19 times, later claiming they'd done so to avoid the wrath of the character who they thought would come after their families.

The schoolgirl developed a "delusional belief system" with Geyser and together they made a plan to kill Payton and become Slender Man's proxies, Smith said. "Anissa was under the command and control of a delusional disorder".

Anissa Weier, 15, (above on Monday) is one of two teenage girls who stabbed their 12-year-old friend in 2014.

Per Mertesacker, Theo Walcott and David Ospina are just three more squad members who could be handed much-needed minutes. They had a hard time too, they lost two games and won several games in the last minutes (against West Ham and Watford).

'They knew this was wrong. The girls have said it was an attempt to please Slender Man and become his servants, or to keep the character from attacking their families.

"Anissa and Morgan, two 11-year-olds, found one another and then shortly after that, Anissa lost touch with reality and fell prey to that delusion", Smith said.

He played segments of Weier's police interrogation in which she described a plot to kill Payton in order to become a proxy of Slender Man. Osborne says the initial plan was for Weier to stab Leutner, but Weier couldn't do it and instead directed Geyser to do the stabbing. They understood what they were doing was wrong, ' attorney Kevin Osborne said.

Osborne said the police interviews show it wasn't until after the attack had taken place that Geyser told Weier that Weier or her family could have been in danger. If she's found to have been mentally ill, she would be committed to a mental hospital for at least three years.

They said they were unaware of her obsession with the sinister fictional character beforehand and revealed that their daughter was "absolutely" remorseful over the attack.

Two detectives and two former teachers of Anissa Weier's are expected to testify Wednesday in the case of Anissa Weier. Weier supposedly anxious that the creature would've killed her or her family had she not attempted murder. Five witnesses took the stand during the first day of testimony.

When they emerged, he said, they saw a scene of total destruction. "We had to fend for ourselves", he told Reuters . The brutal storm struck Cuba along a coast studded with resorts that are among the pillars of the island's economy.

Weier and Geyser were both charged with attempted first degree intentional homicide.

The burden of proof rests with Weier's attorney to prove that her client is mentally ill, and therefore not legally responsible for the stabbing.

At her trial, Anissa's defense team is arguing Anissa was mentally ill, and should be confined to a mental hospital, rather than sent to prison for the crime. Psychologists have testified that she suffered from persistent depression and a delusional disorder linked to schizotypy, a diminished ability to separate reality from fantasy.

Waukesha County Circuit Judge Michael Bohren yesterday dismissed at least two dozen potential jurors, including several who expressed skepticism of an insanity defence, U.S. media reported.

Geyser has pleaded not guilty to being a party to first-degree attempted homicide.

The trial will determine Weier's mental health and whether she is to be sentenced to prison or a hospital.
