Air Force Drops 29-13 Contest at #7 MI

Rockford's Quinn Nordin kicked five field goals to lead the seventh-ranked Michigan Wolverines past Air Force 29-13 in a battle of unbeatens at Michigan Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Nordin made all five field-goal attempts to tie a MI single-game record set by K.C. Lopata in 2008.

MI got great field position at the Air Force 43 off Charlie Scott's 22-yard punt. They have been unable to score a touchdown against Air Force, settling for three field goals and a 9-6 lead at halftime. Air Force routed VMI 62-0 in its season opener and hopes to ride the momentum to its first win against a Big Ten opponent since beating Northwestern in 2003.

The Wolverines got a boost from special teams, as well.

Nordin then easily made a 49-yard field goal with only 4 seconds remaining in the second period to put MI up 9-6 at intermission.

Freshman Donovan Peoples-Jones electrified the stadium early in the second half when he returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown, giving the Wolverines a 16-6 lead. Tim McVey ran for 98 yards and a score to lead seven different players with rushing touchdowns, and the defense held the Keydets to 95 yards - the second fewest in school history- en route to their first shutout since 2009. A 25-yard return from Peoples-Jones gave MI starting position at the Air Force 46.

The two teams traded field goals in the second stanza, including a 26-yarder by Nordin followed by a 50-yarder by Strebel, once again deadlocking the count at 6-6.

For the third straight week, Michigan's offense continued to sputter at best, leaving some questions for the Wolverines as they prepare to enter Big Ten play next week. But right tackle Nolan Ulizio gave up a sack of Speight that lost 10 yards.

MI turned the ball over four times in its first two games and has relied heavily upon its defense, which has scored three touchdowns in 2017.
