American allegedly fighting for ISIS now in military custody as 'enemy combatant'

An American citizen fighting for Islamic State in Syria surrendered to U.S-backed fighters earlier this week and has been handed over to USA forces, the Pentagon said on Thursday. He has been officially designed an "enemy combatant" by the Defense Department.

The U.S. -led coalition said Saturday the strike was on a target east of the Euphrates River in Syria near Dayr Az Zawr, a position known by Russian Federation to contain SDF fighters and coalition advisors.

Reflecting the demarcation line, the US -led coalition said on Thursday the SDF was not planning to enter Deir al-Zor city. Earl Brown, a spokesman for U.S. Central Command, which oversees military operations in the Middle East.

A State Department official told CNN that it was aware of the reports but had "no information to share at this time", while the Justice Department and Federal Bureau of Investigation also declined the network's request for comment.

US officials are working out what they will do with the man, if he is confirmed as an American.

Mohamad Jamal Khweis, 27, was captured by Kurdish forces in northern Iraq in March 2016. He fled to Turkey before returning to Syria and joining the SDF. Some military spokespeople suggested that the fighter "surrendered" on or around Tuesday. European governments and others have said that any of their nationals captured should be returned for trial at home.

The officials did not give the exact location of the surrender nor the current location of the American.

About a year later, the Guardian reported on foreign fighters trying to flee the conflict and noted that a USA citizen - Kary Paul Kleman of Florida - surrendered to Turkish border police.
