Pence reinforces tough position against North Korea at UN

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence said this in his speech at a UN Security Council meeting on Wednesday, an Ukrinform correspondent reports.

"I met with the foreign minister of China and we made it very clear that we expect them to do more", Pence told Fox News.

Pence noted the US position on peacekeeping reform - namely, that missions should be aimed toward achieving a political solution, that they should have consent of the country hosting them, that there should always be an exit strategy, and that they should "adjust to progress and failure".

Vice President Pence on Thursday appeared to disagree with former White House chief strategist Stephen Bannon regarding the country's strategy on North Korea.

Stocks move up, dollar dips as investors await Fed
This is 0.8 per cent below the revised July estimate of 1,190,000, but is 1.4 per cent above the August 2016 rate of 1,164,000. But the Fed's goal of normalizing monetary policy after years of "easy money" has been complicated by uneven economic growth.

"There was some talk, two, three weeks ago, by some commentators that the most powerful military on Earth doesn't have the ability to take action to defend our people, that's wrong", Pence said.

Pence repeated a United States call for the Myanmar military to end the violence immediately and support diplomatic efforts for a long-term solution.

"There's no military solution [to North Korea's nuclear threats], forget it", Bannon said in an August interview.

President Trump wants "this Security Council and the United Nations to take strong and swift action to bring this crisis to an end and give hope and help to the Rohingya people in their hour of need", Pence said.

He said that North Korea's possession of nuclear weapons was "simply unacceptable", backing up Mr. Trump's stern warnings at the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday that the US could "destroy" North Korea if threatened.

The vice president said that he and the president will meet with their counterparts in South Korea and China at the United Nations on Thursday, to discuss possible avenues to "further isolate" the regime.

"A clear majority of the Human Rights Council's members fail to meet even the most basic human rights standards", Pence said.

"This body must reform the Human Rights Council's membership and its operation", he added.
