Sen. Sherrod Brown: Trump's words on N. Korea making us less safe

Germany and the United States disagree on how to handle the standoff with North Korea, Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday, condemning US President Donald Trump's threat to "totally destroy" the reclusive state.

"There is a saying that goes: "Even when dogs bark, the parade goes on", Ri said to reporters in front of a hotel near the United Nations headquarters in NY.

Several policemen were dispatched to the terminal, and security agents quickly escorted Ri out of the building. But in front of his hotel, he issued Pyongyang's first response to Trump's threat a day earlier to "totally destroy" North Korea if it poses a threat to the US or its allies.

"There is a saying that goes: "Even when dogs bark, the parade goes on", Ri said, quoted in Reuters. "If (Trump) was thinking about surprising us with dog-barking sounds then he is clearly dreaming".

Ri was using a North Korean phrase used to denote nonsense.

When asked what he thought of Trump's description of Kim as rocket man, Ri replied, "I feel sorry for his aides".

The former secretary of state argued that Trump had an obligation to both stand up for American values while being diplomatic when facing a risky situation like the one presenting itself with North Korea's nuclear program. The President said, "Rocketman is on a suicide mission for himself and his regime".

"After allowing North Korea to research and build Nukes while Secretary of State (Bill C also), Crooked Hillary now criticizes", Trump tweeted.

Isolated and impoverished, the North says it needs a sturdy nuclear deterrence to protect it from an aggressive USA and the autocratic regime has made militarism a central part of its national ideology.

Interestingly, North Korea's ambassador to United Nations had left his seat prior to Trump's arrival even as a junior North Korean diplomat remained.

It was a slap in the face for South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who said he appreciated UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres' efforts to bring North Korea back to the discussion table during a meeting with him Monday.
