Even though the breach didn't affect the company's United Kingdom business, it has still managed to compromise the personal information of a number of its British consumers.

"These survey results reiterate something we already had a feeling was happening, which is that many people don't know what to do in the event that their personal data is stolen", ITRC president and CEO Eva Velasquez said in a statement.

The credit rating company revealed today (Oct. 10) that a file containing 15.2 million United Kingdom records-more than one-third of the 44 million country's residents that it collects information-was accessed during the massive breach disclosed in September, reports the Financial Times. Equifax says it already started notifying these customers by post mail.

Now, the company is saying that usernames, passwords, partial credit card details, and driving license numbers were also stolen.

A separate LendEDU poll of 1,000 USA consumers found that just 15.8 percent had not yet heard of the Equifax breach.

Almost 14 million further United Kingdom records were stolen, but they contained only names and dates of birth.

The survey, sponsored by CyberScout, also found that more than 49 percent of respondents were confused about what to do after receiving a breach notification.

Equifax has faced seething criticism from consumers, regulators and lawmakers over its handling of the breach, which occurred between mid-May and late July and was not disclosed until Sept 7.

The company said it has now started notifying impacted United Kingdom consumers.

"It has been regrettable that we have not been able to contact consumers who may have been impacted until now, but it would not have been appropriate for us to do so until the full facts of this complex attack were known, and the full forensics investigation was completed", Remon said.

The NCSC along with Britain's National Crime Agency, Financial Conduct Authority and other government entities are investigating the Equifax breach and plan to offer future updates if necessary.
