Mumbai attack insight prevented a thousand deaths in Las Vegas: Sheriff

A few minutes later, Paddock began a 10-minute massacre that killed 58 people in the deadliest mass shooting in modern United States history.

Las Vegas police faced new questions on Tuesday about their response to this month's mass shooting at an outdoor concert, a day after a county sheriff disclosed the gunman shot a security guard before, not after, opening fire on a concert crowd below his window at the Mandalay Bay hotel.

Lombardo said Campos' actions still assisted officers in helping to "pinpoint the location of the suspect", but added that the department now has no idea what prompted Paddock's ceasefire.

Although Campos had radioed for police to come after the exchange, police officers found him "in the hallway" as they rushed to the shooter's room, Lombardo said.

The gunman who killed 58 people in the deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history targeted aviation fuel tanks, stocked his auto with explosives and had personal protection gear as part of an escape plan, authorities said Monday.

Investigators are still piecing together evidence left behind in the hotel room and probing Paddock's background to determine why the retired accountant did what he did.

South African television channel SuperSport were thought to be close to an agreement with Cricket SA but that could not be reached.

There is still no evidence Paddock was motivated by ideology, or that there was another shooter, he said.

Bitsko said the level of preparation and work inside, including setting up wires for the cameras, suggested that it took Paddock "days to finish" getting it all ready.

"That's been a matter of discussion, whether what I said was accurate or not".

"Currently, we do not believe there is one particular event in the suspect's life for us to key on", the sheriff said.

The coroner says an autopsy has been done on the man who authorities say rained gunfire on a concert crowd from a Las Vegas Strip hotel suite and shot himself dead before police burst into his room. "We believe he chose to take the lives he did and he had a very purposeful plan that he carried out".

But the revised timeline shows officers would have known where Paddock was before the mass shooting even started. The sheriff also confirmed investigators are talking with Paddock's brother Eric Paddock, who traveled to Las Vegas, and continue to speak with the shooter's girlfriend, Marilou Danley, to get insight.

D'Antoni, however, said he did not expect the exchange to bring Harden extra motivation given the drive he had already shown. I think Chris Paul is going to help him just kind of get back into just being able to hoop and play and stuff like that.

Lombardo's announcement also raises the question about why Paddock stopped firing during his rampage.

Investigators are still searching for the motive behind the attack by 64-year-old Paddock. After Jesus Campos, a hotel security guard, took fire on the 32nd floor - Paddock blasted rounds through his door - officers headed up the stairs and found the barricaded stairwell door. We didn't know where he was going to be in that room'.

"I think they prevented a thousand deaths, and I think it's important for the American public to understand that", Lombardo said on Sunday.

Fasulo explained the change in the timeline by saying that dozens of investigators have been using different sources of information - including surveillance video, computers, police body cameras, cellphones and interviews - and that not all clocks were in sync.

Meanwhile, friends and relatives of the victims and other concertgoers who survived returned to the scene on Monday to reclaim prams, shoes, phones, backpacks and purses left behind in the panic as they fled.
