"The event has earthquake-like characteristics, however, we can not conclusively confirm at this time the nature (natural or human-made) of the event", the USGS said in a brief statement.

Suspicions are high that North Korea may have carried out another weapons test today after a magnitude-2.9 natural disaster was detected very close to one of their test sites. But South Korea's Meteorological Administration says the quake was natural.

No such quakes were detected after North Korea's five previous, and much smaller, nuclear tests since 2006.

Ireland will play their first ever Test match against Pakistan on home soil next May, the country's cricket chiefs announced on Thursday.

South Korea's weather agency says the four quakes likely occurred because the underground nuclear explosion September 3 weakened or affected the tectonic plate structures in the area.

The US Geological Survey assessed it to be of 2.9 magnitude, originating 23 kilometers northeast of Sungjibaegam, Ryanggang Province, in North Korea.

A stronger 6.3-magnitude quake was triggered by a test on September 3 and it was felt across the border in China and sparked global condemnation.

The North's latest nuclear experiment, which it claimed involved the test of a hydrogen bomb, generated seismic waves of 5.7 magnitude, according to the Korean authorities, or 6.3 magnitude based on the US' analysis.

"I think the Punggye-ri region is now pretty saturated". These disturbances are more numerous and widespread than seen after any of the North's previous tests, 38 North said. Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho said last month the North could test "an unprecedented scale hydrogen bomb" over the Pacific Ocean, in response to U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to "totally destroy" the country. Since North Korea began testing its nuclear capabilities, experts have debated whether explosions at Punggye-ri could trigger another volcanic eruption.
