Trump to nominate White House aide to head DHS

The White House announced Wednesday that President Trump plans to nominate Kirstjen Nielsen, a top White House aide, to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

After Trump's remarks, Nielsen said that it is her privilege to work at the White House and, before that, to have served in this administration at the Department of Homeland Security.

Trump cited Nielsen's "great talent, knowledge and devotion" and praised her performance in her current role as White House deputy chief of staff.

Nielsen had served as Kelly's deputy at DHS and followed him to the White House when he replaced Priebus.

ALCS Series Prediction: Will Astros turn away underdog Yankees? 10/12/17
The New York Yankees are headed to Houston for a matchup against the Houston Astros in the American League Championship Series. The Astros and Yankees ranked first and second in runs scored (896, 858) and home runs (238, 241) during the regular season.

Trump said Thursday that Nielsen will need "no on the job training" and will be "ready on Day One".

Nielsen acknowledged Thursday that she will be taking the reins during a hard period.

She would be immediately served a full plate of operational challenges and policy controversies: overseeing the government's response to multiple natural disasters, safeguarding the country's transportation networks from terrorist attacks and protecting its election infrastructure from foreign hackers. "I look forward to working closely with the Administration and Ranking Member McCaskill to expedite the consideration of Ms. Nielsen's nomination and help make America safer and more secure".

Nielsen is now the White House principal deputy chief of staff. She has reportedly acted as Kelly's enforcer as he has sought to impose order and discipline on a chaotic and disorganized West Wing.
