Amazon to make The Lord of the Rings TV series

Amazon canceled two female-centered period dramas: The '60s-set "Good Girls Revolt" was not renewed for a second season in December, and the Zelda Fitzgerald series "Z: The Beginning of Everything" was axed this fall when the studio reversed itself after a surprise renewal.

Deadline notes that Amazon has been looking for its Game of Thrones series equivalent for some time now, and they're hoping Lord of the Rings will be it.

Christopher Plummer talks about replacing Kevin Spacey in Ridley Scott's new movie
The actor is pleased with the role, sharing, "I'm fascinated by doing real people". I admire Ridley Scott and I'm thrilled to be making a movie for him.

"We are delighted that Amazon, with its longstanding commitment to literature, is the home of the first-ever multi-season television series for The Lord of the Rings", said a Tolkien estate representative.

Reports that Amazon was keenly pursuing a series adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings - with the uncharacteristic assistance of CEO Jeff Bezos - have proven true. The deal includes a potential additional spin-off series, Amazon said Monday.

Dream Chaser passes a big milestone with a successful glide test landing
Right now, two companies - SpaceX and Orbital ATK - hold contracts with NASA to periodically resupply the station through 2018. In previous tests this year a helicopter carried the Dream Chaser aloft but did not release it.

"The upcoming Amazon Prime Original will be produced by Amazon Studios in cooperation with the Tolkien Estate and Trust, HarperCollins, and New Line Cinema", said Amazon. Deadline adds that the series will also focus on events that precede the book's first part The Fellowship of the Rings.

The program has already been approved for multiple seasons. Either way, the fandom surrounding LOTR is sure to boost Amazon Prime Subscriber numbers, similar to what "Star Trek: Discovery" did for CBS All Access, increasing the streaming platforms subscription revenue by almost 50%. The original trilogy grossed over $2.9 billion worldwide, and it truly was a global phenomenon.

The company now has a consensus rating of Buy and an average price target of $48.88. ( NYSE:BPY ) opened at C$23.68 on Friday. This buyback authorization permits the utilities provider to reacquire shares of its stock through open market purchases.

Of course, The Hobbit precedes Fellowship by many years, but that story was tainted so ably by the absurd trilogy it was inadvisedly extended into that it will probably be some years before anyone feels like revisiting it.
