GameStop PowerPass, Unlimited Used Games Program, Temporarily Suspended

GameStop's game subscription service is here, aaaand it's gone.

The program, as it was originally revealed, works like this: For $60 you get a 6-month rental subscription that allows you to visit any GameStop store and "rent" one of the used games in stock.

The program, which was set to roll out on November 19, was going to be available exclusively for PowerUp Rewards members.

Kotaku first reported the suspension of GameStop's PowerPass program.

"We have elected to temporarily pause the roll out of the new PowerPass subscription service, based on a few program limitations we have identified", a spokesperson said to Kotaku.

However, that is all in the past tense, because after a recent soft launch PowerPass has been suspended.

These Black Friday shopping tips will come in handy
Before heading out to the mall or going online, it is helpful to make a list of what you need to buy and what you'd like to buy. Black Friday is supposed to be a day when consumers are able to find merchandise at rock bottom prices.

In a likely attempt to stem the tide of game downloads, GameStop has devoted more and more floor space in each store to physical geek culture goods like Funko Pop figurines and T-shirts. "W$3 e will allow [guests] to bring the pass, and video game they have checked-out, back to receive a full refund". This goes as far as throwing out the Holiday Guide that contains marketing for Power Pass, as well as replacing this week's weekly ad.

Assuming PowerPass is relaunched in a functional manner sometime in 2018, this is still not the outcome GameStop wanted right now. Kotaku references employees who speculated that GameStop's computer infrastructure couldn't handle the program. But not anymore, at least for the time being. The company will also allow those who had purchased a spot in the program the ability to pick out any Pre-Owned game for free by way of apology for the inconvenience the sudden halt of PowerPass might have caused. Now it's just a question of whether GameStop will upgrade its system, alter PowerPass to work with it, or just scrap the game-lending service entirely.
