Zimbabwe military threatens to 'step in'

"Targeting people with a liberation background must stop forthwith‚" Chiwenga said at a media conference in Harare.

The speech came a day after Mugabe publicly criticised Mnangagwa for the first time during a speech at a rally on November 4.

"We must remind those behind the current treacherous shenanigans that when it comes to matters of protecting our revolution, the military will not hesitate to step in", he said, adding that the instability was causing anxiety in the country.

Mnangagwa's sacking opens the way for Mugabe's wife, Grace, to be named a vice president at the annual conference of the ruling party, ZANU-PF, in December.

Soon after his dismissal Mnangagwa quickly fled into exile, vowing to return and launched a direct challenge to Mugabe by calling for members of the ruling party to desert the president.

Dramatic moment hero airport worker grabs smoking bag before explosion
He dropped the bag and bystanders mistook the noise caused by the commotion for gunfire, Brown said. The incident did not pose any danger to people at the airport, the department's Twitter post said.

"One thing about Mnangagwa that angered Mugabe after so many years as his closest ally is the shifting of responsibility of the massacres by the deputy to his 93-year-old master, who at the burial of (the late Vice-President) Joshua Nkomo referred to Gukurahundi as a moment of madness".

Among the big wigs alleged to be loyal to the former vice president and facing the axe are state security minister Kembo Mohadi, cyber security mister Patrick Chinamasa and Environment minister Oppah Muchinguri. Grace Mugabe, 52, did not fight in that war.

The move could pave the way for her to get the top job after Mugabe.

"The President has been maintaining his legacy all these years".

"Members must go with equal opportunity to exercise their democratic rights", he said.

Chiwenga, in belligerent style demanded that "counter revolutionaries" - a euphemism for Moyo and his G40 acolytes - be expelled from Zanu PF.

Among other security threats emanating from the goings-on Zanu-PF were "reckless utterances" by some politicians denigrating the military, which he said were causing despondency among its members, he said.

The crisis, he concluded, meant Zimbabwe was struggling with "cash shortages and rising commodity prices".

But it started running out of those dollars and a year ago it introduced "bond notes", a parallel currency pegged to the USA dollar.
