2018 could be the year of changeable emoji directions.

The Unicode Consortium, aka the folks who decide what emoji end up on your smartphone, added a proposal to its 2018 emoji list for a mechanism that allows users to change the direction of its ubiquitous icons.

The changes in this new beta list of emojis includes making superhero and supervillain smiley faces into human-form emoji.

In addition to the new figures themselves, Unicode 11 also proposes support for reversible emoji.

Also possibly coming is the option for developers to offer a direction for emoji, so you can have the gun, vehicle or even train emoji switched around the other way.

'However, that can cause a definite change in meaning when exchanging text across platforms'. But, essentially it means we'll be able to choose an "explicit direction" for certain emoji.
