Duke Energy Says Some Customers May Be Affected by Data Breach

PayPal Holdings Inc. has revealed that TIO Networks Inc., a financial services company that facilitates bill payments in offline locations it acquired earlier this year, was hacked and private data from 1.6 million customers was compromised. "This issue is broader than Duke Energy and affects the customers of any company who used the Global Express network for payment processing", Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said in an email. TIO Networks operates over 60,000 bill payment kiosks across North America and has over 14 million registered users who use its services to make bill payments for wireless connections, cable, utilities, and other kinds of purchases. "We are doing all we can to help".

In announcing the news late Friday, PayPal said its systems are separate from those of TIO and that its own data was not compromised.

The IOC also imposed lifetime Olympic ban on Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko, organizer of soccer's 2018 World Cup. The decision stems from an ongoing investigation into state-sponsored Russian doping during the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi.

TIO is now working with the companies it services to notify affected customers.

Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said Duke Energy officials have been in daily contact with the vendor companies since they unexpectedly disabled their system on November 10.

A strong upcycle in the cargo markets will also support the expected profit improvement next year, it added. Overall revenues are seen rising 9.4% y-o-y to US$824 billion in 2018.

TIO has also begun working with the companies it services to notify potentially affected individuals, and PayPal is working with a consumer credit reporting agency to provide free credit monitoring memberships.

"This will be the process going forward until we are able to negotiate a permanent solution at our authorized walk-in payment locations for Duke Energy Carolinas", Mosier said.
