Turner Prize 2017: Lubaina Himid

Sixty-three-year-old Himid, who was born in Zanzibar, trained at Wimbledon School of Art and is now Professor of Contemporary Art at the University of Central Lancashire, is the first beneficiary of a relaxation in the rules of the notorious art prize, which has allowed artists over 50 to take part for the first time since 1991. In her acceptance speech, Himid thanked her supporters during the "wilderness years" and described her win as "a complete shock".

The £25,000 prize was presented by DJ, producer and artist Goldie during a live broadcast on the BBC. They admired her expansive and exuberant approach to painting, which combines satire and a sense of theater.

THE TURNER Prize 2017 has been awarded to Lubaina Himid, it was announced yesterday evening at a ceremony in Hull Minster, in partnership with Tate and Hull UK City of Culture 2017.
