Instagram is testing a standalone messaging app called Direct

Although the fact is that this is its officially test only and not a final run through, Instagram's logistic strategy for constructing the Direct app is that private messaging can never be a best-in-class experience when it lives inside an app meant for public broadcasting.

Instagram releases Direct, a standalone messaging app.

The move is similar to what Facebook did with its private messaging feature in 2014.

The reason for the split is the notion that private messaging does not fit comfortably within an app which is designed for broadcasting images and messages publicly.

The Instagram Direct app will be available starting Thursday on Android and iOS in Chile, Israel, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and Uruguay, according to technology news website the Verge. The Verge reports that the app has three screens-the camera screen, a profile screen, and your inbox. Direct also ships with four exclusive filters and is ultimately seeking to grow its user base even more by providing people with a more focused experience, albeit one that's still deeply integrated into Instagram. For starters, it's another big step in Instagram's metamorphosis from photo sharing site, to broader social networking platform. All you have to do is swipe left once you are in the Direct inbox to reveal Instagram icon which will direct you to the Instagram app.

It's unclear at this time whether Facebook plans to launch the Direct app globally. In the same way, you can open or access Direct app from the main Instagram app.

By creating the standalone Direct app, Instagram is doing the same thing that Facebook did with Messenger.

Opening Direct would directly be taking you to the camera to persuade one in making and sharing content. When that happens, users can keep swiping right to open the main Instagram app. Now, it has grown to 1.3 billion users, as pointed out by Business Insider.

This is similar to how Facebook stripped out the messaging aspect of its core app and introduced Messenger as its IM platform.
