Mariners & Angels acquire more worldwide slot money in pursuit of Shohei Ohtani

MLB.com reporter Mark Feinsand reported that the Mariners made a trade with the Minnesota Twins to acquire $1 million in worldwide signing bonus money.

Twins acquired OF Jacob Pearson from the Angels for $1 million in global bonus pool money.

Pearson is a 19-year-old left-handed hitting outfielder that was snagged by Los Angeles in the third round out of West Monroe, La.

Banuelos was probably the Mariners' top catching prospect in their minor league system, certainly from a defensive standpoint.

Banuelos was drafted in the fifth round out of Long Beach State.

"I would love to thank the Angels for everything".

The Twins could still look to re-sign Dominican shortstop Jelfrey Marte, the 16-year-old prospect whose $3 million signing bonus was voided last month due to concerns about his vision. The other four finalists - the Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and San Francisco Giants - are restricted during this worldwide signing period to no more than $300,000 in any individual signing bonus.

Ohtani, 23, is a two-way star in Japan who wants to try to do the same in Major League Baseball.

Minnesota had $3.07 million in bonus pool money before the trades, but it is not among the finalists in the Ohtani bidding. Teams had to pay a $20 million posting fee for the rights to negotiate with him. Also, all three major league outfielders - Mike Trout, Justin Upton and Kole Calhoun - are now signed through 2020, at least.

For the Twins, they were informed on Sunday that they were not a finalist for Ohtani's services, so they made a decision to cash in a large chunk of their remaining bonus slot money - Minnesota had $3.245 million to spend, per the Associated Press - they had earmarked for Ohtani to acquire a pair of prospects. The Cubs, Dodgers, Giants and Padres are capped at $300,000. He remains a free agent. Due to his age, Ohtani can only sign a minor league contract and is subject to the global bonus pool.
