United States bombers to fly over Korean peninsula

Tensions on the Korean peninsula have risen markedly in recent months after North Korea's latest missile and nuclear tests, conducted in defiance of global pressure and United Nations resolutions.

The bomber flew from the Pacific U.S. -administered territory of Guam and joined U.S. F-22 and F-35 stealth fighters in the annual exercises, which run until Friday.

The long-range, multi-mission supersonic aircraft would conduct bombing drills with South Korean fighter jets, Yonhap said earlier.

The B-1B Lancer bombers will take part in the large scale exercise Wednesday.

The U.S. and South Korea used over 200 aircraft in their recent drills.

The US has previously deployed bombers as a show of force after North Korean missile or nuclear tests.

Seoul and Washington say the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system is intended exclusively to counter missile threats from North Korea but Beijing sees it as a threat to its own military capabilities.

North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Pak Myong Guk met Feltman in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, on Wednesday and discussed bilateral cooperation and other issues of mutual interest, KCNA said.

South Korea's military says the Hwasong-15 the North tested last week has the potential to strike targets as far away as 13,000 kilometres (8,100 miles), which would put Washington within reach.

New operations this week will see U.S. bombers fly over the Korean peninsula as part of a huge drill that is being co-ordinated with South Korea.

The military exercises, called "Vigilant Ace", are created to enhance joint readiness and operational capability of USA extended deterrence, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement.

All but five of the 49 countries have violated sanctions in other ways, such as facilitating front companies for the North Korean regime or importing sanctioned goods and minerals. China has previously condemned North Korea for launching test missiles and, three months ago, backed United Nations sanctions against the country after a significant nuclear test.
