UT closing in on deal to make Rainsville's Jeremy Pruitt new HC

Our partners at GoVols247 are reporting that Athletics Director Phillip Fulmer is meeting with Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt on Wednesday.

Multiple reports out of Knoxville, with WMNL radio afternoon talk show host Jimmy Hyams leading the way, indicate that Pruitt has accepted the Tennessee offer, believed to be in the range of six years and between $4.1 million and $4.2 million annually. Before that, he was the defensive coordinator at both Florida State and Georgia. In 2013, his only season with the Seminoles, he constructed a unit that led the nation in scoring defense en route to another national championship.

Pruitt replaced Georgia coach Kirby Smart as Alabama's defensive coordinator in 2016.

Fulmer, the legendary former Vols head coach, was hired as AD. Pruitt may need a little longer to turn the Volunteers into a national title contender.

Pruitt would be tasked with trying to restore Tennessee's program to a level it hasn't reached in years.

Particularly at point in the ongoing conversations between the two parties are questions regarding Pruitt's obligations this month to College Football Playoff and Alabama's participation versus Tennessee's need for a head coach to hit the ground running immediately and without distraction upon being named. Dooley coached with Saban at LSU and with the Miami Dolphins. "There ain't no holding back".

Assuming Pruitt surrounds himself with strong assistants, he should make a strong foray into head coaching at Tennessee.

Fulmer took over the head coach search on Friday, when he replaced John Currie as athletic director.

The school walked back a contract offer to Greg Schiano after Volunteers fans overwhelmingly criticized the move.

Despite all of the problems behind the scenes, the end result is still pretty good for Tennessee.

The 43-year-old assistant had also previously worked for the Tide as a defensive assistant from 2007-12 and as a graduate assistant in 1997, as well as a high school assistant throughout the state of Alabama from 1998-2006.

Although Pruitt isn't the home-run hire some Vols fans will have wanted, he should have Tennessee headed in the right direction in 2018.
