Gujarat Assembly Polls: PM Modi's roadshow elicits Congress ire

Earlier Prime Minister Narendra Modi had alleged that a Congress-Pakistan conspiracy was in play in Gujarat and the western neighbour was showing undue interest in the Gujarat Assembly Election. "The double snatandard of Election Commission can be gauged by the fact that while it registers an FIR against news channels and news papers for holding an interview of Congress President, Shri Rahul Gandhi at New Delhi; it gives a free licence to BJP and r to violate the law, the Constitution and Code of Conduct as it meekly surrenders itself and prostrates before the Prime Minister and the ruling party". Just after noon on Thursday, Mr Modi reached the Ranip polling booth in Ahmedabad amid applause from the huge crowd that had gathered to see the Prime Minister.

The Election Commission said, a total of 66.75% voter turnout was recorded in the first phase and in the second phase, about 69% recorded till 5 pm.

Congress workers held protests near the EC headquarters at Ashoka Road in Delhi.

The Congress has accused the Prime Minister of breaking the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) by taking out a "road show" after casting his vote on Thursday. Mincing no words, Surjewala said while the CEC may have been principal secretary to the present prime minister and served as a civil servant in Gujarat, as a constitutional functionary it was expected that he and other Election Commissioners would act with neutrality and as an unbiased arbiter.

On Joti, Surjewala said: "We feel that the chief election commissioner is acting as Modi's personal secretary though he holds a constitutional post". This, it said, was "flagrant violation of the model code of conduct".

Surjewala also criticised the poll panel: "EC's conspiratorial silence and absolute inaction reflects as to how one more independent institution in our polity has become a puppet at the whims and fancy of Bhartiya Janata Party".

Donald Trump thanks Putin for praising US' economic performance
He denounced as "invention" alleged claims that Russian Federation had meddled in the 2016 United States presidential election. Trump signed a new package of sanctions against Russia, Iran and North Korea in August. "This is beyond common sense".

Acting on a complaint filed by the BJP, the poll panel held that the interview telecast by the channels "violated" the Model Code of Conduct on the day before the last phase of the elections on Thursday. Tragically, (the) naked prejudice of the commission and (its) failure to act against the Prime Minister and BJP leaders is writ large.
