Govt behaves undemocratically, not allow Dalits to speak, says Jignesh Mevani

The "Yuva Hunkar Rally" by Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani, aimed at raising issues like social justice, unemployment and atrocities against Dalits and release of Bhim Army's founder Chandrashekhar Azad, today began to a tiresome response at Delhi's Parliament Street. Mevani, who won from Vadgam in Gujarat in Assembly elections, said elected representatives were not allowed to speak and that was Gujarat's model. The rally was held amidst tight security and took place despite not receiving a go-ahead from the police.

Azad, 30, was arrested under the tough National Security Act over Thakur-Dalit clashes in Uttar Pradesh's Saharanpur district previous year. The newly elected Gujarat legislator shared the stage with JNU student leaders, including Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Shehla Rashid. Assam's farmer leader Akhil Gogoi and senior Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan also attended the rally.
