LG Electronics to showcase the world's biggest 'rollable' TV at CES 2018

We come to CES to see the most outlandish and extravagant developments in tech, and few live up to such a description as well as LG Display's new rollable OLED TV. While this is as innovative as it gets, LG has not yet revealed the specifics of the TV. LG, unsurprisingly, has continued its support for OLED, while Samsung still feels QLED is the way to go. The SUPER UHD TVs with FALD allow denser backlighting zones throughout the display, unlike edge lighting, in which backlights are positioned on the edges of the TV panel. The 4,000-nit QLED TVs are likely to be brighter than LG's TVs, too. Samsung has already announced The Wall TV while Sony has unveiled three smartphones.

An OLED panel comes with several advantages over traditional LCDs.

As far as we know, like last year's TV, the W8 OLED won't come with a stand. The new version is still created to cling to your wall and stuffs most of its hardware into the soundbar below. It's made up of small panels, so the TV can be produced in a variety of shapes and sizes. Under the hood, the high-end TVs are powered by LG's fastest Alpha 9 that LG says can more accurate color and "enhanced image rendering". The FX800 series appears to break there, offering the same (or a very similar OLED display), but without the Technics audio tech onboard.

Users can also view the contents of their LG fridge via a smartphone app and a 2.0-megapixel, wide angle camera, so you can check how much milk is left while at the grocery store. The annual Consumer Electronics Show is happening in Las Vegas right now, shining a global spotlight on advanced technologies such as Universal Display's OLED solutions for enthusiasts and investors alike.

While a thinner TV looks great, it's not exactly a fool-proof gimmick with which to market them on considering how little space 4K sets take up these days anyway when compared to ye olde TVs of yesteryear that had plenty of junk in the trunk. Look out for our expert, impartial reviews soon.
