In a rare interview for the documentary The Coronation on the Smithsonian Channel, Her Majesty discussed the "disadvantages" of wearing it.

She jokingly states you can not look down when wearing the Imperial State Crown, which weighs 2lbs 13oz (1.28kgs), as your neck would "break".

The 91-year-old sovereign also revealed how "horrible" it was to travel in the ornate golden carriage to the ceremony at London's Westminster Abbey - the setting for every coronation since 1066.

The Queen was told the details for the first time by presenter Alastair Bruce.

'You know, it would have been up to about there when my father wore it - fortunately my father and I have the same sort of shaped head. I mean, it just remains on.

When Anthony Geffen finished his new documentary about the Queen and her coronation a courtier took him aside. "Otherwise, they're quite important things".

The crown was made for George VI's coronation in 1937 and is set with 2,868 diamonds including 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds and hundreds of pearls, including four known as Queen Elizabeth I's earrings. It also features a gemstone known as the Black Prince's Ruby.

Describing the crown as "unwieldy", the Queen explained how it was adapted after the death of her father to fit her.

She revealed the seven-metre-long (24ft) gilded carriage, which weighs nearly four tons and is pulled by eight horses, is not meant for travelling in at all.

Wearing the crown requires The Queen to stay very still.

According to the monarch, her father George VI ordered for the jewels to be hidden in the grounds of Windsor Castle, where they were buried, hidden in a biscuit tin.

"At one moment, I was going against the pile of the carpet and I couldn't move at all".
