Ragbir is the executive director of the New Sanctuary Coalition of NY and has been nationally recognized for his work. Ydanis Rodriguez and Jumaane Williams - were handcuffed and taken into custody, along with 16 others. His lawyer argues that he might be able to vacate the conviction and then reinstate his green card. New York City Council Speaker Corey Johnson was also among the protesters.

He argued people have the right to protest and pledged resistance to President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration enforcement agenda. Following removal proceedings in 2006, he spent almost two years in immigration detention before his release in February 2008, a period during which he became a rising voice for the country's immigrant community. Ragbir, head of the New Sanctuary Coalition of NY, was detained when he checked-in with ICE, as hundreds held a silent Jericho prayer walk outside. And he called on the NYPD to release body camera footage of the protest if it exists.

As in Ragbir's case, immigration authorities had for years allowed Montrevil to continue to live and work in the U.S. while he was trying to clear a challenge to his immigration status related to a decades-old conviction for selling drugs. And seeing how he's even married to a USA citizen, so he is a citizen, but they want to strip him of every single thing that the naturalization process allowed him. "It always comes down to the hope that they will not detain me, and they will not deport me". He has been instrumental in advocating for rights of immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants, and perhaps it's supposed to send a message to those of us who are in the movement, sort of a scare tactic and an attempt to damage the movement.

"Ravi Ragbir means everything to this city", said Kaji Dousa, the organizations co-chair.

The demonstration Thursday quickly descended into chaos as Ragbir was transported in an ambulance, which authorities say was headed to a hospital but which protesters sought to block as they believed it was going to another ICE facility.

"Over the last 12 years, Mr. Ragbir's immigration case has undergone extensive judicial review at multiple levels of the nation's judicial system, including both immigration courts and federal appeals courts. He will remain in custody pending removal to Trinidad", Yong said.

Another protest rally in support of Ragbir is planned for 5 p.m. Thursday in front of Varick Street Detention Center, where he will be detained. "In each review, the courts have uniformly held that Mr. Ragbir does not have a legal basis to remain in the USA", she wrote in an email. Ragbir has not been in Trinidad since he arrived in the U.S. in 1994.

"They just simply said that they could".

Holiday gift for retailers; sales up a solid 0.4 percent
Economists had expected retail sales to rise by 0.4% compared to the 0.8% increase originally reported for the previous month. Sales of furniture grew by 0.7% to $10.33bn, while those of building materials increased by 1.2% to hit $32.98bn.

Support from activists, community leaders, politicians, and supporters continues to build momentum.

Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, called for Ragbir's release Thursday.

He is married to Amy Gottlieb, a US citizen and fellow immigration activist, but has been unable to regularize his immigration status through marriage because of his prior conviction.

"We have so many leaders, in addition to Ravi, whom Ravi has built up over these many, many years", she said.
