Hilts handcuffed and arrested teacher Deyshia Hargrave during a Vermilion Parish School Board meeting on Monday in an incident caught on a dramatic 12-minute video uploaded to YouTube.

Reggie Hilts, now a marshal in Abbeville, was a police officer in the city of Scott when the incident occurred.

"I want change to come from this", she said.

"Deyshia Hargrave's expulsion from a public meeting and subsequent arrest are unacceptable and raise serious constitutional concerns", Jane Johnson, the interim executive director of the A.C.L.U. of Louisiana, said in a statement.

"My voice was quieted amid group of onlookers worries for the director", she said.

"I know there is going to be an investigation, but that was terribly unfortunate".

But as video of Hargrave's arrest spread around the world, the superintendent said he and his family have received death threats.

At the rally, Hargrave exhorted educators to continue the fight for more accountability among the school district's administrators.

The American Civil Liberties Union and her teachers union are investigating Ms Hargrave's case.

"By silencing my voice they've also taken away, or tried to take away, my First Amendment rights to speak", Hargrave said in the video.

"I have been taught to stand up for what is right even when doing that is hard, and I will continue to work towards that", said Hargrave. So please don't let the conversation end with me. "The Constitution prohibits the government from punishing or retaliating against people for expressing their views, and the fact that a schoolteacher was arrested at a public meeting of the school board is especially troubling".

Fontana did not return phone messages Wednesday.

"I'm appalled at this, and you should be too", she said. "I've never been handcuffed in my life".

That's when Mr. Fontana called over a school resource officer, who told Ms. Hargrave to leave. She sat down and the meeting went forward.

She was pressing for answers as to why the Superintendent was granted a $30,000 salary raise. Shortly after being escorted out of the meeting, Hargrave was handcuffed by an Abbeville city marshal. "They're fine, so I'm fine", Hargrave continued. Asked how he saw that, he said he had left his seat at the front of the room to see what happened.

Hargrave was arrested by the Abbeville Police Department but Abbeville city attorney and prosecutor Ike Funderburk told KATC that after watching the video, he will not prosecute Hargrave. She was released on bond.
