The second highest level of warning advises that there will be very poor visibility in "many inland areas" this afternoon and evening and it is expected to worsen later this evening and tonight.

James Madden, a forecaster for Exacta Weather, warned that snow will hit "northern and western areas" next week.

Visibility less than 100m in places. Winds fresh to strong westerly much of the time.

"Fog will be quite stubborn to shift and could still be an issue into tomorrow afternoon, there are some places where it won't clear all day".

Mark Wilson, a forecaster at the Met Office, told MailOnline: 'We have issued a fog warning with parts of Northern Ireland, Wales, the west of England and Devon affected.

Mr Wilson said: "There is a lot of radiation fog around at the moment".

'The snow will initially hit many northern and western areas and persist over several days, before impacting many other parts of the country at times during next week.

"Now we have ideal conditions for widespread fog across the country, particularly, for some southern areas, where it could linger for some lengthy periods from tonight".

On its website, the Met Office says: "The cooling of land overnight by thermal radiation cools the air close to the surface".

When temperatures drop low enough, "supercooled" liquid droplets become suspended in the air and can freeze on surfaces, this is the cause of "freezing fog".

"Elsewhere it will be dry with clearer spells".
