Officials with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints said Monson died at 10:01 p.m.in his home with family. The church said in May that because of his age, Monson had stopped attending regular leadership meetings.

Monson, who was 90, became the church's 16th president in 2008.

The next president was not immediately named, but the job is expected to go to next longest-tenured member of the church's governing Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, 93-year-old Russell M. Nelson, per church protocol, according to the Associated Press.
