Red Faced, UIDAI Introduces New Virtual ID To Address Aadhaar Privacy Concerns

Even after an exposé appeared in The Tribune of how easily one can get Aadhaar details of anyone for just Rs 500, UIDAI has been very adamant about the security of the Aadhaar system.

The petitioners are of the opinion that the new Virtual ID concept is "untested and unworkable". "The Aadhaar data, including biometric information, is fully safe and secure", the authority had said in a statement, calling the report in The Tribune "a case of misreporting".

This Virtual Id would be 16 digits long and will have a shelf life so that it can not be misused. All agencies that are registered to authenticate identities need to start shifting to the new system by 28 March.

"Even to the Income Tax department or other agencies required by law to map Aadhaar, people don't have to give their Aadhaar number and can authenticate using the Virtual ID", Ajay Bhushan Pandey, CEO of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) told ET in an interview. For an authentication request by agencies, UIDAI will send a UID Token, which is a specific number that will remain the same for a specific agency but will be different for different entities.

The Aadhaar-issuing body's CEO, Ajay Bhushan Pandey, tweeted "Virtual [ID] is one of biggest recent innovations in this field".
