Juan Del Potro sets up Auckland Classic semi-final with David Ferrer

- Reuters picAUCKLAND, Jan 11 ― David Ferrer may be heading into the twilight of his career but the 35-year-old rolled back the years as he beat Hyeon Chung to cruise into the ATP Auckland Classic semi-finals today.

In what proved a sterner test than his first-up victory against equally youthful Denis Shapovalov, del Potro on Thursday dominated all of the key moments to win 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.

Ferrer, who has won the tournament four times, broke his opponents serve five times (twice in the first set and three times in the second) and was always in control.

Former US Open champion Del Potro hit eight aces to breeze past the 18-year-old Canadian, who hit 20 winners but committed 40 unforced errors.

Get all of that, and who knows? He also has a 6-1 career record against the Titans with 13 touchdowns and just one interception. Brady has completed 68 percent of his passes for 2,496 yards (312 per game), 19 TDs, three INTs and a 110.9 passer rating.

While del Potro was trumped by the Spaniard in 2014, he has since beaten him three times, including at the 2016 Olympics and 2017 US Open.

Bautista Agut, the world No.21, will go on to face Robin Haase in Friday's semi-finals after the Dutchman's defeat of giant-killing German Peter Gojowczyk 6-4 6-4.

"I tried to play consistent and aggressive because, with Chung, he plays with power, and it's never easy", Ferrer said afterwards on court.

Del Potro will enter the top 10 for the first time since August 2010 on Monday ahead of his Australian Open first round clash against American teenager Frances Tiafoe.

"Bautista Agut is a unsafe player, he has experience in finals and he beat me in the past (at the 2014 Australian Open), so it's going to be hard".

"But I've been working hard to play this tennis and hopefully I can still improve in the next matches".

The Bahamas-based Shapovalov was outgunned in every aspect by del Potro, who served big and frequently unleashed his trademark forehand.

"If he has a good day, he is very unsafe as a lefty, he serves well and volleys".
