The Syria Civil Defence said one of its rescue workers was among 18 people who died when what witnesses identified as Russian jets bombed Misraba.

Almost 30 civilians, including children, have been killed by airstrikes in the rebel stronghold of Eastern Ghouta, outside the Syrian capital, Damascus.

The Observatory said Russian jets carried out the strikes in Misraba.

Either way, such strikes are alarmingly common in Eastern Ghouta, even as deals have been reached to evacuate substantial parts of the enclave, rebels remain dug in in parts of it, and civilians remain trapped on the front lines for the foreseeable future.

They added that another 12 people including two children were killed in a raid on Hamouriyah city late December, while two others were killed in Madira and another three in Arbin.

As government forces looked to gain ground rebel shelling of regime positions on the edge of eastern Ghouta killed 14 soldiers, the Observatory said.

On the outskirts of Damascus, eastern Ghouta is one of the last remaining opposition strongholds in Syria and has itself been under government siege since 2013, causing severe food and medicine shortages for up to 400,000 residents.

There was no immediate confirmation by the Russian military, which is providing air support to government forces fighting rebels.
