Eire to carry Good Friday alcohol ban

The ruling means that pubs in the country can serve alcohol on Good Friday for the first time in nearly a century.

The law has already passed through the Seanad, where it will go to Áras an Uachtaráin where it will be signed into law next week, meaning that the coming Good Friday on March 30th will be the first to allow alcohol.

However, Michael Kealy, the owner of The Wagon Wheels in Knockananna, said that he didn't agree with the decision, citing Good Friday as one of the "two days of the year that we can close".

Donall O'Keeffe, Chief Executive of the Licensed Vintners Association, which represents Dublin publicans, welcomed the move.
