In a statement, Turkish Foreign Ministry said: "We strongly condemn the attacks targeting worshipers during Friday prayer in Saad Ben Obadah Mosque in Benghazi that claimed many lives and left many wounded".

Medics told Reuters news agency that at least two people were killed and 55 were wounded.

"This heinous act should not provide a justification for revenge attacks".

The toll was one of the highest from a single attack since Libya slid into turmoil after the uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. But staging a vote is a major challenge in a country still split among military and political factions, and where rival governments have claimed authority since the result of a 2014 vote was disputed.
