Elon Musk's Falcon Heavy rocket launches successfully

The fire and smoke have long dissipated but the excitement of Tuesday's maiden launch of SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket continues to linger as a lone red vehicle with a mannequin "driver" makes its way through the blackness of space to the soundtrack of David Bowie. But the payload has overshot that route and is now headed even deeper into space.

SpaceX launched the Falcon Heavy, the most powerful rocket now in use, on February 6, 2018 from Cape Canaveral as hundreds of thousands of people gathered from across the world to witness a part of history. It involves a truly enormous launch vehicle, called BFR or Big Falcon Rocket, that would give off more than 11 million pounds of thrust at liftoff.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk wants a new space race, and it's hard to argue with his reasoning.

It was fortunate that so many residents around Cape Canaveral are either used to this sort of thing, or followed the news and was aware that Elon Musk was about to make noise. "So we kind of tabled the Crew Dragon on Falcon Heavy and focusing our energies on BFR".

For several years, there has been widespread speculation that Musk could step down from Tesla by 2020 to focus on his private rocket-ship company, SpaceX.

Musk said the idea of launching the auto into space was more for fun rather than using something "really boring like a chunk of concrete" to test the payload of a new rocket. "SLS launches larger payloads farther in our solar system, faster than ever before possible".

Loaded with Musk's red Tesla and a mannequin in a spacesuit, the monster rocket's historic test voyage has captured the world's imagination, reports AFP.

Tesla ended the fourth quarter with $3.37 billion in cash, just below the $3.5 billion in the previous quarter, which had been boosted by a $1.8 billion debt sale.

Indeed, some have suggested that the dwarf planet Ceres could serve as a base or hub for those missions, with mining spacecraft landing there first before pursuing the rich asteroids.

The Falcon Heavy is essentially three smaller Falcon 9 rockets strapped together, adding up to a total of 27 engines.

"I think the new architecture, the BFR architecture, is the way to go", he said.

Still, you can watch a live stream of the Roadster cruising haphazardly through space, piloted by a dummy who would reportedly be hearing David Bowie's "Space Oddity" blaring from the auto stereo, if the dummy had ears and space wasn't an eternally quiet vacuum. Tens of thousands of spectators made the pilgrimage from across the country to experience the huge heat and thunderous roar of the rocket's 5 million pounds of thrust.
