Chicago area gearing up for more rounds of snow

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for the Quad-City area beginning at 6 p.m. and continuing until 6 p.m., Saturday as a band of snow is expected to develop and spread into parts of eastern Iowa and far northwestern IL by late this afternoon.

About 1,600 United States flights were cancelled, with about a third of flights into or out of Chicago and Detroit airports called off, according to, which tracks airline traffic.

Delays at O'Hare are averaging 35 minutes and less than 15 minutes at Midway. Detroit is a busy hub for Delta.

The National Weather Service issued a winter storm watch from Thursday evening to Friday evening, warning of hard travel conditions during the Friday morning commute.

Early this morning, the National Weather Service received reports of 4 inches of snow in northern IL, including near Chicago's Midway Airport. This would mean 5 to 7 inches of snow in areas near the Wisconsin-Illinois border, 3 to 5 inches in the Madison area and 1 to 3 inches near Wisconsin Dells.

Portions of northern IN were hit hard, with 8 inches reported IN New Carlisle.
