The Gladiator star, 43, is Phillips' top choice for the role in his DC movie, which will be produced by Martin Scorsese.

Sources say Phoenix has agreed to the role but has not yet entered negotiations with studio Warner Bros., who were reportedly eyeing Academy Award victor Leonardo DiCaprio in September. WB has yet to comment and negotiations are not yet underway.

The Hangover director Todd Phillips is working on a Joker origin movie and has selected the Walk the Line actor as his top choice, with sources telling Variety that he met with Phoenix in late 2017 and the actor has agreed to the role.
