Angry parents staged protests outside a private school in Kolkata on Friday after a dance teacher was found to have been sexually abusing a Class 2 student for almost a year. The police also managed to safely escort him away from the angry parents and an investigation has been launched. Based on a complaint filed by the girl's parents, the dance teacher has been arrested by the Tollygunge Police station and charged under the stringent POSCO Act.

Sushmita Das, whose daughter studies in Class 1 of the school, alleged a teacher asked them not to protest as "our ward was not the victim".

The traumatised student revealed her ordeal to her parents on Thursday evening following which they approached the school administration demanding arrest of the teacher.

Referring to the increasing number of sexual assault cases in schools, State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said: "We have already set guidelines for schools to follow".

School authorities did not issue any statement till 2 pm but Sudeshna Ray, a member of West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights, said they did not deny the allegation and were "sympathetic to the victim and her family". The parents immediately complained to the school and demanded strict action against the teacher but the complaint fell on deaf ears of school authorities. Authorities deployed policemen at the school to tackle the situation.

A similar incident occurred in the city just over a month back when another south Kolkata school came under fire when a four-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by two physical training instructors. The accused dance teacher has been arrested. The incident also led to the dismissal of the school principal, who refused to take responsibility for the lack of CCTV cameras in the school.
