Korean leader proposes inter-Korean summit with Moon at earliest date possible

South Korean President Moon Jae-in had "virtually accepted" North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's invitation to Pyongyang, officials said on Saturday, making way for a first inter-Korean summit in more than a decade.

Numerous protestors carried American flags, and one carried a banner making a direct plea to President Donald Trump.

Roh Moo-hyun, a liberal South Korean president who carried on with Kim Dae-jung's engagement policy, crossed the border to the North to meet Kim Jong Il in 2007.

Moon is joined by his national security director, intelligence chief, chief of staff and the unification minister. Moon had earlier met Kim Yong Nam during a dinner he hosted for visiting dignitaries.

United Nations deputy spokesman Farhan Haq told reporters at United Nations headquarters that Guterres sat near 90-year-old Kim Yong Nam at a dinner Friday night, and they were also near each other during the opening ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.

The spokesman says Moon also called for a quick resumption of dialogue between the United States and North Korea.

The U.S. Vice President Mike Pence and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe represented their homelands.

Moon said improved relations between the Koreas may be a step toward resolving the nuclear standoff. North Korea boycotted the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul and blew up a South Korean commercial airliner the year before.

It turns out, the two impersonators were dressed as President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un.

The North Korean delegation also included the country's 90-year-old nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam, who was expected to attend a VIP reception before opening ceremony.

The North Korean delegates later Saturday may attend the debut of the first-ever inter-Korean Olympic team at the women's ice hockey tournament in Gangneung.

Also, North Korea sent its own cheerleader squad and an art troupe who are scheduled to perform in the Pyeongchang Winter Games.

The North's participation has been generally welcomed, but right-wing protesters have shown up at several venues to burn North Korean flags and tear up portraits of Kim's brother.

USA officials have declined to elaborate on the sanctions Pence mentioned, saying any further information could help countries that might try to get around the measures - an apparent oblique reference to Chinese vessels that have been caught on satellite trading oil with North Korean ships in violation of United Nations sanctions.
