The last thing spectators at the 2018 Winter Olympics were expecting to see was US President Donald Trump hanging out with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

The invitation was verbally delivered by Kim's sister, Kim Yo Jong, during a Saturday meeting at Moon's presidential compound in Seoul a day after the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics in South Korea.

A visit by Moon to the North would enable the first summit between leaders from the two Koreas since 2007.

That said, these officials said that if the North Koreans had approached Pence with pleasantries, he would have responded in kind.

Meanwhile former Made In Chelsea star Chloe Green, daughter of retail tycoon Sir Philip Green, is friends with Princess Beatrice. So much so, that the reality star is said to be being considered for the role of bridesmaid.

Mr Pence, Ms Kim and other world leaders attended the opening ceremony in Pyeongchang, just 80km from the heavily fortified border between North and South Korea.

"Our objective here today is to stand with our allies, but it's also to stand up for the truth, and to recognize that whatever images may emerge against the powerful backdrop and idealism of the Olympics, that North Korea has to accept change", he said.

The North Korean officials were received by Moon's chief of staff.

Pence only stood for the US team, according to the Associated Press, though others seated near Pence stood and applauded for the Korean delegation.

Kim Jong-un's sister arrives in South Korea in historic visit
The South Korean President is set to meet with the full North Korean delegation on Saturday at 1100 local time. According to ABC News , early Friday morning Pence slammed North Korea's parade as "an ongoing provocation".

Vice President Mike Pence says the U.S.is demanding that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un place on the table the prospect of his country giving up its nuclear weapons as a precondition for supporting any substantive talks between the two Koreas. The family, starting with her grandfather Kim Il-sung, has led North Korea since it became an independent nation.

The overture follows heightened tensions over the North's missile tests.

The White House said Pence didn't avoid Yong Nam, noting instead that the North Korean leader was seated elsewhere.

Mr Moon has previously said he will need reassurance from the North that it would help resolve the nuclear crisis. UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres called for denuclearization talks during a brief conversation with North Korea's nominal head of state Kim Yong Nam, UN Secretary General's Deputy Spokesperson Farhan Haq told reporters on Friday. "We will not allow North Korean propaganda to hijack the message and imagery of the Olympic Games", he said in Japan earlier this week.

Kim Yo Jong arrived earlier in the day on an unprecedented visit to the South by a member of the North's ruling Kim family. They said Pence could have opted to sit with the USA delegation and avoided the box that included the North Koreans.

Wary that the North is trying to drive a wedge between Washington and Seoul, he made a point of having no part of any of the North's brand of for-Koreans-by-Koreans detente. "For three months, she nearly starved because the North Korean soldiers came and they took control of that area". The New York Times reported Friday that during the opening ceremony, North and South Korean athletes marched together under the unified flag, a moment that was "moving" to many spectators.
