Bjoergen had been seeking to defend her title - having edged out Kalla in Sochi four years ago - but the 37-year-old Norwegian still had the sizeable consolation prize of becoming the most decorated female Winter Olympian in history.

Kalla won the women's skiathlon cross country race ahead of Norway's Marit Bjoergen, preventing her from collecting an unprecedented third straight gold medal in the event.

Diggins said she was so nervous before the race that she threw up.

A total of 102 gold medals are up for grabs at the PyeongChang Games, including 12 in cross-country skiing. "I need to work on a few things to manage stress".

The gold is Kalla's third of her Olympic career after she won the 10-km freestyle in Vancouver in 2010 and another as part of the Swedish 4x5-km relay team in Sochi four years later.
